Elephant Bold and Beautiful – Contemporary Animal Art

Breaking the Rules of Realism: A New Chapter in My Creative Journey

I’m thrilled to share my latest painting, Elephant Bold and Beautiful, a vibrant mixed media piece that marks a bold departure from my usual style. Measuring 29.75cm by 42.45cm and created on board, this work is a celebration of colour, texture and emotional expression – an unapologetic abstract take on one of nature’s most majestic creatures.

For those familiar with my portfolio, this piece may come as a surprise. I typically lean toward more muted palettes and realistic interpretations, especially when painting animals. But this time, I wanted to explore something different – something that felt alive in a new way. The result is a kaleidoscopic elephant portrait that pulses with energy, emotion and unexpected hues.

Why Colour Matters in Contemporary Animal Art

The decision to abandon true-to-life colours wasn’t just aesthetic – it was conceptual. Elephants are often depicted in greys and browns, grounded in realism and tradition. But what happens when we strip away those expectations? What emotions emerge when we allow the subject to speak through colour?

In Elephant Bold and Beautiful, I used a wide spectrum of greens, blues, oranges, reds and yellows to highlight the contours and character of the elephant’s face. The brushwork is expressive, layered and intentionally imperfect – each stroke adding to the sense of movement and vitality. The wrinkles and folds around the eyes and trunk are exaggerated through colour contrast, inviting the viewer to see the elephant not just as an animal, but as a symbol of wisdom, resilience and joy.

This approach aligns with a growing trend in contemporary animal art: using abstraction and colour theory to evoke emotion rather than replicate reality. It’s a style that invites interpretation, conversation and connection – and I’m excited to explore it further.

Mixed Media Magic: Materials and Method

The piece was created using a combination of acrylics, inks and textured mediums. Working on board allowed me to build up layers without warping and the surface responded beautifully to both wet and dry techniques. I experimented with palette knives, sponges and unconventional tools to create depth and dimension, especially around the eyes and ears.

The final result is tactile and immersive. It’s a painting that rewards slow looking and one that feels different every time you return to it.

What This Elephant Represents

Beyond technique and style, Elephant Bold and Beautiful is a personal statement. It’s about embracing change, challenging comfort zones and allowing creativity to lead the way. Elephants are often associated with memory and emotional intelligence, qualities I deeply admire and strive to reflect in my work.

This painting is also a nod to the idea of boldness itself. Not just in colour, but in spirit. It’s a reminder that beauty doesn’t always follow rules and that sometimes, the most powerful art comes from taking risks.

Let’s Talk: Do You Like This New Direction?

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this shift in style. Is this colourful, abstract approach something you’d like to see more of? Or do you prefer my more traditional, true-to-life pieces?

Your feedback helps shape my practice and I genuinely value every perspective!
